The Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office began the School Resource Officer Program in 1999, with one grant-funded position. Since that time the program has expanded to six full-time deputy positions to cover all primary and secondary schools in Culpeper County.
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)
School resource officers represent a law enforcement presence in the public school community. They build partnerships with administrators, teachers, parents and students and enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
School resource officers are assigned to every public school in the county and parents are encouraged to contact them for any concerns they may have.
The Sheriff’s Office has deputies assigned to teach Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) at both middle schools. D.A.R.E. is a series of classroom lessons that teach children how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.
Deputies also provide lessons to kindergarten, second and fourth grade classes on a variety of topics including stranger danger, 911, and gang and bullying prevention.
