An Elkwood man was taken into custody today following a pursuit along Brandy Road in which a deputy used his vehicle to stop the suspect from fleeing.
Late this morning Det. Kiline Madison was interviewing Frank C. Stirewalt II in the parking lot of Wal-Mart in Culpeper. During the interview Madison ran the man’s information through dispatch. Madison learned that Stirewalt was wanted on an outstanding warrant for being a fugitive from justice from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The man fled the parking lot at 11:41 a.m. in a Chevrolet Trailblazer and traveled north on Brandy Road towards Brandy Station; Madison pursued the suspect in his unmarked patrol vehicle.
After running several red lights, and traveling at a high rate of speed, the suspect attempted to make a u-turn near the intersection of Guinn Lane and Brandy Road. Once Stirewalt attempted a u-turn, Madison was forced to use his vehicle to strike Stirewalt’s vehicle, stopping the man from returning into the densely-populated area from which he originally fled.
As a result of the pursuit and further investigation, the driver, Frank C. Stirewalt II, 27, of Elkwood is charged with:
- Felony attempt to elude
- Attempt to escape by force or violence
- Intentionally possessing or transporting ammunition or a firearm after having been convicted of a felony
- Reckless driving by speed
- Obstructing a law enforcement officer in the performance of his duties
- Driving while having a suspended or revoked license
- Failure to obey traffic signals
“We will take opportunities to stop vehicular pursuits, even if it involves my deputies using the appropriate force to contain a suspect’s vehicle,” Sheriff Scott Jenkins said today. “I strongly support the deputy’s actions and I’ve emphasized from day one that pursuits are a threat to the public. We will work to stop them before residents are injured.”
In addition to the suspect, his wife, Brandy N. Stirewalt, 21, of Elkwood, is charged with possession of a schedule I or II substance. Brandy Stirewalt was in the suspect’s vehicle at the time of the pursuit.
Neither the deputy, or the couple, were injured during the incident.
As of this evening Frank Stirewalt and Brandy Stirewalt are being held in the Culpeper County Jail without bail.
